In May we get a tremendous run of big blues in Marion. I have been guiding in the early season out of Marion Harbor for the past couple of years and I love going for Blues. If you like to use the spinning tackle or the fly rod, they will show you a great time. I find them in close to shore in the early season, and sometimes find them tailing in less than 3 feet of water. The shallow water in Marion is not like the cape, it is dark rocky water with a dark bottom. I have also been fishing for them in late may and early June out on the cape, where you can find solo or small groups of large blues finning in 2 or 3 feet of water. If you don't have access to a boat in May, try the Bath Tub, by the chatham light house. The water on the inside of the beach there heats up before the water on the outside does and the blues lay around during the daytime. It takes a little splashing around to get them going. Sometimes If you land a cast right near them they spook, but they will turn right back around and go for the popper or fly ! The size of these early season mosters seems to be a little different every year. Last year we took several fish between 7-10 lbs. the year before we had mostly 10-12 pounders, and three years ago I think a majority were between 12-15 lbs. I remember some springs were we didn't see the big ones until late may, last year I took the first one on May 1st, hope this helps, Good Luck !
