We caught a lot of smaller bass this summer on the smaller slugo about sand eel size arkansas shiner color. We fished them on 1/2 oz lead jigs and just ran the hook from the front the length of the hook and out the top. Fished them by swimming them through the water in and up and down pattern. If the bass were around they would hammer them. Some keepers were also being caught this way. I don't know if this would work on the bigger ones but don't see why not you just would have to use a bigger jig.
