Bonito, bass, blues, & more at the Hooter

Friday morning we headed from Green Pond out to the Hooter (6 miles south of Wasque Point). Unbelievably calm seas, with visibility to the horizon in all directions. Guided by Ron Stokowski we trolled mackeral and blue Rapala Magnums and finally got on the board with Mr. Bonito. I put two in the boat along with numerous bluefish including a 34 1/2" gorilla with a bad attitude, and a single striper. We also saw a large (75 -100 lb) tuna clear the water in pursuit of bait, and idled alongside a barnacle encrusted 300+ lb ocean sunfish. Near No Man's Island we came across schools of large baitfish (herring, small bluefish?) leaping out of the water a hundred at a time fleeing some type of predator. We never did hook up whatever was underneath them but it made for an exciting 20 minutes. Great place to go in calm weather.
