10/8 Ginat Bass Rock Virgin assault

Thurs PM Jay took myself and my friend Jon Rodin on my first assault on Giant Bass Rock. While we managed 1 schoolie among us I saw a couple good sized mid 20" bass take swipes and my fly and no doubt Jay's striped tarpon was down there watching also.

Clearly a one fish spot; that is your not going there to catch lots of fish; your going there to catch ONE fish and a big one at that. Interesting spot also as its a pure presentation place; booming casts are irrelevent; its mroe a question of how well can you tend to your fly in the water column and how well can you remain in contact with your fly right up to the last moment.

I had 2 hits I was completely unable to deal with as the fly was only 8-10' off the shore and I wa swirling it in figure 8's using the rod tip when fish hit it.

between the slack and the rod angle - no way...

I'd say that catching a fish in that spot is going to make your week, not just day.

I think I get Jay's obsession..
