Couldn't convince any other fellow fruitcakes to join me on the surf this afternoon, so I headed out alone to Scussett beach in the wind and rain. Well, there ARE fish there, but I'm thinking that the quality is still questionable as I wring out my waterlogged garments.
Despite being a meat slinger and all, I'm really not much of a sand-spike and lawn chair kinda guy. I rather spike one rod and work the other with an eel or lure. Tough wind and surf made difficult that today.
The first piece of bait I dropped on the bottom was a nice, large 10" eel. Within 10 minutes or so, I was hooked up and fighting. Not for long though, as my line was shredded well above my 50lb leader. I'm still not sure what happened except that I'm now home empty handed despite receiving the one bite I was hoping for.
After that, I saw 4 micro-schoolies caught on the beach. One was caught by a guy I talked to briefly who's companion was an enthusiastic golden retriever. I think there is someone who posts here who fits that description, but I didn't ask at the time.
My one chance was already shot. A rather large seal was working the shoreline as I fished. He would occasionally pop up and observe us few nuts on the surf, mildly amused by by these brightly colored, laterally moving beach creatures. Not sure if he had anything to do with my shredded line.....
I just had to think of Jay H while I was being battered in the surf trying to cast. The one cast that produced my one hit was made just as a stealth power wave crashed into my chest almost knocking the air out of me while simultaniously slipping just enough salt water into my waders to make the rest of my foray a wet and chilly one.
Now, where to go next? Hmmmmmm, 2 days left till the grim reality of the work week returns...........
Anyone with a plan wanna meet up?? I just can't accept the end just yet. I still wanna smoke a striper for Thanksgiving ala Larry B! I've still got these eels and pogies to use up!!
