Any weighted fly hitting your rod tip will do damage. ... particularly if you catch the rod with the gap of the hook.
Your solution is with your casting motion. If you draw straight back and cast tight loops with fast rod you are at risk. Try casting with a little draw slightly off-line eithe to the outside or inside.... the path of the forward cast will be slightly to the inside or outside of your rod tip every time.
Clousers do have a nice action that you don't get with using sinking lines but I have switched almost entirely to less heavilly weighted flies in favor of appropriate line choice. And that means I never use a float line for salt... 80% fast full sink and 20% sink tip.
