Met-up briefly this morning wih Mark Cahill, and Kevin ??? on the Weir River. Nothing much happening and they headed off to try Rivermoor. I tried three good spots on the Weir with no success at all, and decided to bag it after my four day fishing marathon.
Checked all my usual vantage points on the way home, and at the last one, lo and behold, there it was! The Holy Grail of shore-based striped bass fly fishermen. A huge surface Blitz was going on across the bay. A large flock of birds was working the frothy water, and it looked reachable from shore! This was nothing like the half-hearted blitzes we've seen lately, and looked suspiciously like bluefish.
I waited bout ten minutes, to see if it would last, because I knew the spot was only reachable by boat or with a very long walk. I tried to drag Brian away from Old Salt, ( He's got a boat,) but he couldn't get away, so I hit the road for my long forced march.
After walking as fast as I could, I finally reached the spot, a little late for the major Blitz, but there were clearly still fish around.
I spent the next half-hour sight-casting to very aggressive bass in four-feet of water, against the backdrop of the Boston Skyline. Every throw of the popper bought repeated strikes until the fish either hooked themselves, or I ran out of retreive. Fish mostly 20-24".
Then the yahoos arrived to troll through with their 12-inch rubber eels, and that was it, bass gone. I tried to warn them, but I don't think they spoke English. And I thought Yahoo Season was over! That's what I get for fishing in broad daylight on a weekend.
The good news is, some spincasters had been there since 3:00 AM, and gave me the full report: The fish had been there all morning! Almost eight hours! Periodically schools of either bass or blues would work there way up and down the beach, eating everything in sight. To illustrate the point, he hoisted a 32" bluefish up for me to admire. When they arrived in the dark, fish were making splashes that they said sounded like eight-foot long 2" by 10" planks hitting the water! They were chunkin' and didn't get any large bass this morning, but he went on to tell me that he's taken eight fish over 42" out of there this year, including a 34-pounder last week!
I think I got a new favorite spot!
Hey Rocky, what you doin' tomorrow morning?
