You should see the bonito near here!!!
There have been loads of them!! You can hook up from shore or by boat.
They are all along the southern Rhode Island shoreline.
There is more bait in the water now than I have seen in many years.
At least for August. There are thousands of tiny bunker swimming in thick
schools. The bonito are tearing them up. They do not even seem to be too fussy.
I have caught them on a variety of fly patterns ranging from Twisslers to epoxy
flies. The bait is ranging in size from 3/4 inch to 3 inches so almost anything
will work. I have used the striper line which is a clear intermediate line.
The retrieve has just been a steady slow strip. Mostly just keep it out there
and let the fish get it. The baitfish get chased out of the way and your fly
is the only thing left - such an easy target. But those bonito have really
been slashing the fly hard!! The sunnier days are best.
