opinions wanted: Redington reels 8/21

I am very happy with my Redington Red.Start rods, but a guide advises me that a large trout would smoke my Red.Start 5/6 reel and that a keeper bass would do in my 8/9/10 reel. So what are they designed for? Could my guide be wrong? What's a reasonable replacement?
