I have yet to see a trout smoke a reel. Really! :-)
As to large bass, they are frequently caught on Pfluegger medalist reels, which have no drag to speak of.
If it'll make you feel any better, I had a (Florida) guide not let me bring in a Sage DS 990 rod into his boat, saying I couldn't possibly have a good time with that, and that I'd blame him. Last time I went out with that guy.
I'd suggest you use your reels and not worry about it. Maybe when that large trout smokes it, you could get a new one. :-)
I will replace or upgrade any piece of gear AFTER a fish proves it inadequate. That philosophy has saved me lots of $$$ and gave me a good feel just how capable our everyday gear is.
