In the early 1980's they use to have a run of Coho salmon in the North river, They raised the brood stock in the Sandwich hatchery on Cape Cod. I guess for ecconomic reasons the state of Mass. discontinued stocking them. It was a fishery that was fun, but not many people knew of the run in the North river. New Hampshire had them running in the Lampery River out of Great Bay for about the same period of time. The state of NH had a trap at the dam in New Market NH. They use to trap the adults returning from the sea, keep stock for mantaining the run, and release the remainder to run the river and be caught by fishermen up the river. Great fun to catch a 9 to 14 lb fish in a small rapid running river. I have a 12 1/2 lb Coho mounted and over my fireplace. A real fun unknown fishery. The run was usually in October to December. Ecconomics stopped it. Art B.
