Started at the east end at 3 AM with eels. Had one run but no other hits.
Drove over to the radar station and walked poles 255 to 240, drifting eels. Not
one hit. Eel action has definitely diminished over the past week, at least for
me.
After sunrise, the crazy surface activity started up again. It was most active
east of Sagamore Bridge all the way to the east end jetties. Unlike Friday, however,
the action was more scattered, the stripers were smaller (less than 20 inches),
and the blues were gone. Also, the bass were even choosier than before. This time,
the best offering seemed to be a blue and white rubber shad jig, the smaller the
better. Had I brought my fly rod, I bet a white or white/blue deceiver would
have worked well. Poppers, which were slammed on Friday, were inconsistent today.
Two fellows fishing next to me with what looked like a tiny homebrew blue and
white pencil popper (3 inches long) or tube lure were outfishing everyone by
about 5:1.
Once again, I could look down into the weed line adajacent to the water and see
lots of micro-bass swimming by, cornering the tiny herring fry.
This scene continued more or less unabated until 10 AM.
