Randy,
It was my pleasure to attend the annual RFA meeting at the Miami International Boat Show last week. I have been a very active member of the RFA advisory board and I've produced a video documentary that chronicles the damage caused by pelagic longlining and drift nets. I also contribute to the CCA. I feel that both organizations serve a purpose. It's like a duck hunter that belongs to both the NRA and Ducks Unlimited -- you should contribute to both!
Now that the RFA has been around for three years, they have proven themselves and have earned the respect and support of the fishing industry (tackle mfg., boat builders, tackle retailers, charter boat associations), sportfishers, and even commercial fisherman using sustainable gear. Jim Donofrio, Executive Director of the RFA, has become a force to be reckoned with in Washington. Jim has diligently fought on behalf of the rights of all recreational anglers and has won many significant battles. The RFA is remarkably effective and Donofrio and the rest of the advisory board are not afraid to tackle important issues that other organizations have failed to address.
Randy, please consider supporting the RFA…it's money well spent! If you're interested in getting a copy of a 20-minute video: "Gladiators of the Deep/Rape of a Resource" call 1-888-SAVE FISH for more information. The RFA is looking for a "minimum" contribution of $10.00 to defer the cost of shipping and handling. I have displayed the video at a number of fishing shows and the audience reaction has been very rewarding. It has taken me a year to produce this video and I guarantee it will hold your interest. It explains how longlines and drift nets are responsible for destroying the traditional harpoon and rod and reel fishery for broadbill swordfish. The documentary will take you on a journey from Menemsha on Martha's Vineyard, to Catalina off the coast of California. You'll also visit Florida and see some exciting underwater footage that's quite unique.
The video has already been sent to every member of Congress and is now going out to every Governor in the United States. With your help, we can get this gear out of the water!
It's always a pleasure to hear from someone who's interested in doing what it takes to improve the resource.
