10/19 Cotuit Bass Blitz

There I was, 5:30 this afternoon, driving back from soccer practice, when I took a detour to check my boat on its mooring.

As I cruised by the beach I did a double-take. Birds. Lots and lots of birds, right inside of the anchorage at the north end of Cotuit Bay.

Under the birds: splashes and more splashes.

"Daddy is going fishing," I said to the kids, dashed home, strung up a rod with a Clouser, grabbed the oars and was off of the mooring within ten minutes -- a record for me.

I motored 100 feet, shut down, and drifted right into the middle of a 100 foot diameter circle of breaking fish. Flipping right out of the water fish.

First cast and right on. 20" fish, lipped and released without breaking the surface. Second cast, same thing. Third, ditto.

Half an hour and fifteen fish all in the same range.

Then the sun started to set, the harbor was beautiful in the last light, all golden, and fall, and sniff ... sniff ....

Not many more days like today.

These fish was catchable from the beach. Park at Ropes, walk east towards Handy's Point, and there they are. At least they were at low tide at 5 pm today.

Same thing happens every fall. Major inner harbor schoolie fests.

Off to Manhattan in the morning, my step a little lighter thanks to a good dose of fish success.
