Peter,
I was at the Vineyard from the 17th - 21st of Sept. As TMat stated the fishing was very slow.
I was there with my wife, so I had to be opportunistic in seizing fishing time. Little was based on winds and tide.
Here is a rundown of what I found:
Lobsterville Beach: Many large schools of sandeels and huge schools of mullet moving along the beach at dusk.
Menemsha: A lot of bait - sandeels, silversides, mullet. Small, picky blues around during middle of day. They would follow a fly but not hit it.
Wasque: Had been hot, but cooled off while I was there. Occasional schools of sandeels drifting with tide.
Cape Poge Gut: Lots of bait: sandeels, silversides and mullet. Sunday a fellow on the beach side landed a small blue. Two guys on inland side had keeper bass taken during middle of day on eels.
Vineyard Haven Lagoon opening: False Albies every morning in the area. Breaking right next to shore. Appeared to be feeding on silversides, although sandeels and mullet also present.
The action would start right after it got light - peak at about 7:30 - and continue sporadically after that. A guy from NY caught a 6-8# albie on Monday morning.
I had one swipe at a Hardbody shiner fly.
Edgartown Light: Heard that at daybreak FA's and SPanish Mackeral as well as blues were taken here. Also got a tip from an islander to fish there at night for bass. I never had the opportunity though.
Tashmoo: Lots of bait - heard FA's and blues were here some mornings.
Given the amount of bait present, I would think that things were ready to bust wide open at any time.
All and all, it was a good learning experience given the amount of quality time I had to fish. I particularly like Lobsterville.
After going fishless for 5 days on the Vineyard, I caught a striper on my first cast last night. I had another one straighten out a hook on a snake fly. I guess home cooking is always the best - or maybe right time right place.
Relax and have fun out there - I'm sure you will like it.
Oh yeah, get a good map - the hotspots can be difficult to find.
