Do not own a Valentine myself, but have fished with them several times when I went with a South Shore guide, who swears by them.
They seem to be very well made. Another thing that's nice about the Valentine is you don't have a knuckle-busting whirling reel handle to deal with when a fish runs. With the drag preset, you just clamp your thumb down anywhere on the black sideplate, and the spool remains stationary. Very easy to use.
I believe the reels are made in relatively limited numbers, sort of as a sideline, by a small machine shop in Massachusetts. Price is not bad for a saltwater reel either, I believe about $200 - $250.
That said, I use an Orvis Battenkill myself. IMHO, this is the best reel for the money, less than $150. Have used one in the salt for several seasons, very corrosion resistant, very simple and durable construction.
However you decide to go, best of luck. Guess I just decided to put the extra $100 or so toward the guide fees!
Tight lines,
