I've been an advocate of single-hook barbless for all tackles, and circle hooks for bait.

Trout get studied more often than other gamefish, and one of my TU buddies assures me that studies have shown no difference in mortality between single and treble hooks on the little salmos and salvelini. So maybe an anti-treble crusade is not called for
, but certainly the anecdotes already presented show the downside of having too many trebles attached to a fish that's not your friend.

As for barbless, it's the only way to go. First off, you get a better hookset because you're pulling an object with a narrower profile through the fish's mouth. Then, of course, the release is a thousand times easier and less injurious to the fish.
