Tom
There are two ORV permits, one for Norton Point (South Beach between the left fork
and Metcalf's hole - where the Trustees beach mgt begins) and one for Chappy. The
Norton Point stickers are $75 for trucks not registered on the island and are sold
by Dukes County. The Chappy sticker is sold by the TTOR and costs $75 for a TTOR
member and $125 for non-members. In all likelihood Norton Point will be closed to
ORV's when you are down there because of piping plover nesting. There are 5 nest
sites on that beach right now. The county closes the beach down every year and then
proceeds to do a poor job managing the birds. They usually lose all/most of the chicks
to predators. The Trustees on the other hand manage the birds well, get a high survival
rate AND keep the beach open to ORV's. Something to be said about a well managed
non-profit vs. your county government at work. There is only a single nest site on
Chappy as of last week when I talked to my friend who works for the TTOR and patrols
those beaches. You can probably count on being able to drive on Chappy however you
will have to take the ferry accross Edgartown Harbor rather than driving over Norton
Point. My fiend said there haven't been any stripers landed from shore yet but it
shouldn't be long. I'm going to give it a try this coming w/e. If you do buy the
Chappy ORV permit you'll likely see me out there over the Memorial w/e. Look for the
red Jeep Grand Wagoneer with NH plates that's plastered with ORV permits and covered
with fishing rods. Hope to see you out there.
