Checked out the two points just to the east of South Cape Beach in Mashpee Sat.
evening. Last time I was here, Danny had deposited quilts of weed in close making
it unfishable from shore. This time, there was a pretty stiff SW breeze that drew
in some weed, but I was able to cast far enough beyond the mung line to get about
half of a retrieve without fouling. (Tried some casts with the fly rod and nearly
hooked my ear in the crosswind; not a good idea). Picked up half a dozen schoolies to 22 inches
or so at the second bar, mostly on a jointed Bomber/Eddystone eel combo. Most went
for the rubber eel teaser. Most hit within 20 feet of the shore line. Picked up
a couple more at the first bar on an Atom popper.
Early this (Sunday) morning, I did the black eel thing at Brewster Flats. Among 10 people
all fishing eels,
only one small schoolie was caught the whole morning. On the early incoming,
loads of sand eels were "raining" in the channel, and it wasn't just birds that
were chasing them. Time permitting, I may try again tomorrow morning. One guy
told me that some nice ones (multiple 40" plus fish) were caught on the
Sat. morning tide.
