Congratulations Larry B on your first bonito of the season. I hear you about the
mosquito fleet in Vineyard Haven. I was heading over the Lagoon Pond bridge on
my way to catch the ferry early yesterday and was amazed at the number of tin boats.
Was on the Vineyard 7/31-8/3 - fishing from shore on Chappy. Typical mid-summer
conditions out there. Not so much as a nibble during the day but good fishing
between 7PM and 7AM. Picked up lots of blues and small bass. Attempted shark
fishing from shore on Sat night. The locals who do this have been picking up lots
of browns along East Beach at night. There's even an unofficial 'tournament' on that
beach next w/e. On Fri night I watched a guy who was baitfishing for bass 'play'
one of these bunnies for a hour before he broke off. You DO NOT want to go swimming
off that beach at night. Who remembers where the original Jaws was filmed? MV
My fishing buddy Paul and I figure we'll give it try on Sat night so we spooled up
w/some real heavy line, fixed up some wire leaders and kept a couple of small blues
for bait. We didn't get hooked up but in retrospect maybe that was a good thing.
Highlight of the w/e was my first bonito of the season. Was fishing from the rockpile
on East Beach at first light Sun. Paul and I were catching small blues, as I had
been doing for the two days at that spot/time. No fish showing anywhere, just blind
casting. Was debating the wisdom of fishing sans leaders when wham, my reel is
singing that wonderful tune. Paul and I shout simultaneously BONITO. Talk about a
couple of kids. Landed a fish a tad under 8 #'s. Might have been been a weekly
had the Derby been running.
Was wearing my Reel Time t-shirt on the beach over the w/e and a couple of folks
walked up to me and said I was one of their bookmarks. I guess it's a complement
cause I've been called much worse.
