Blues at Hawes Shoal

After a month of fishing on the North Shore of the Vineyard( teachers get these luxuries) I finally took a trip out to Chappy and Hawes Shoal. I initially thought I had messed up my tide calculations as I saw no rip, but eventually I saw another boat, realized I was in the wrong spot, and got repositioned in a nice rip further away from shore, closer to Nantucket. I started casting into the rip when all of a sudden I saw some 200 blues all in the wave at once, many of them coming after my plug. The fish were only 4-5 pounds, but there was one on every cast and after catching a bunch, I started fishing a plug with no hooks just to watch the action. Great ballet and acrobatics, and a thoroughly chewed up plug. It was a great day and my only regret was that i had none of my kids along. I took them out on the same tide the next day, last Thursday, and we got a few fish, but it was nothing like the day before.
Still, it was a great month of fishing and I am looking forward to a derby weekend this fall.
