Chris
The rock pile I mentioned in my post is on East Beach about 1 mile up from Dyke Bridge.
Bill Downing provided good directions to the bridge. It's really the only
feature/structure on about 5 miles of beach and is usually accessed by folks w/4WD
and somewhat pricey over sand permits sold by the Trustees. The fish I caught on
Sunday was caught with very light spinning tackle and a small metal lure called a Hammer.
I've never done any fly rodding for Bonito so I'm not sure about patterns. Maybe
one of the other folks can help?
Bill covered the three places where you could fish from shore on Chappy w/o 4WD.
WRT Wasque you may want to avoid fly fishing right in the rip with casters at
your elbows but may want to try further to the left/east towards East Beach. The
North Neck side of the Cape Pogue Gut is probably your best bet. About 1.5 mi after
you get off the ferry there will be a road on the left that has two exits with an
island in the middle. If you pass the Chappy Community House on the right you've
gone too far. Turn back and it will be your 1'st right. Go straight on this road,
past the little golf course. Towards the end of the road there's two very small
parking lots (one each right and left). They are both marked by the Town of Edgartown.
The path to the stairs that take you to the Gut is at the back to the second lot
(left side of the road).
Another option for fishing from shore on Chappy is go out on one of the fishing trips
run by the Trustees. A good friend of mine, Paul Schultz, works for the Trustees
and his 'job' during the season is to take folks out for 4 hr shore fishing trips
in one of the Trustees trucks. He picks you up at the Chappy ferry, provides
spinning tackle, and takes folks oversand in search of. He makes out two groups a day
Wens-Sun and the cost is $65. This isn't a plug for the Trustees or Paul but if
there's fish out there he'll know where to find them.
There's also a few folks that guide, check with Cooper Gilks at Coop's tackle shop.
Other places to flyrod are the Big and Little bridges between OB and Edgartown (jetties
on a busy road), along State beach between the jetties, Tashmoo opening (jetty/channel
out in the boonies), Menemsha jetty (bonito being caught pretty regularly there
now), Lobsterville beach, and about 1 mile left/east of Lobsterville beach is an
area called Dogfish Bar.
Sorry for the long post (and for sounding like a tour bus driver)
take care
