I've been reading all the positive feedback on circle hooks. I don't fish eels much anymore but I do spend quite a bit of time live-lining pogies & mackeral. Any of you have any experience using circle hooks with live (or dead whole) pogies. I usually fish them on 8/0 single hook (top lip hooked with no stinger). Recently, I experimented with 6/0 single treble hooks and actually got no deep hooked fish but I felt there was too many oportunities for gill damage.
Given that you are likely to let a fish run a little longer with a whole pogie, the idea of a no set, hook-up with a circle hook in the corner of the mouth is pretty appealing. Will a circle hook set through the upper lip of the pogie into the mouth of a bass? I haven't tried the circle hooks yet because gut hooked fish have not been a huge problem with the pogies (mackeral esp. those under about 10" are a different story). I'll give these hooks a try if anyone has had any success with them for this type of fishing.
Thanks in advance.
