Yes, Orleans is the spot. I am no expert on the spot, but last year in the early
morning at low tide I did well in there. You can fish from the kayak casting to the cut
banks, or land your kayak on one of the islands and fish from the banks. Some banks have
deep water drop-offs and look very fishy. I had a place right on town cove last year
and I made numerous 2 AM departures, rode the tide out and fooled around in the "maze"
Heard lots of popping bass, but no luck when I threw my deceivers at them.
I did best by landing and fishing around a island, then moving on to the next.
The people at Goose hummuck were they rent the kayaks are yor best bet for
up to date info. There is always one resident fly bum there ready toi give you the scoop,
They always were a big help to me (a plug, I know...). Anyway, a different scene from the flats,
and one option available when its to rough to risk a kayak ride out to the flats,
cove is always safe for kayaks. (Bonus is to bring your 11 wt and work the really neat
structure at the inlet at low tide...I always bought my 8 & 11 wt outfits when hitting that area)
As per your real kayak as opposed to the keowee, yeah your right much more efficient
mover. But the little pig allowed me to wade until the water rises to my waiste or a little
above, and I can hop back in, something I am sure I am not coordinated enough
to do in a real kayak.
Anyway, give the folks at the goose hummuck a visit, fall fishing (according to them,
no experience from yours truely) is supposed to be a blast back there.
Good luck
Greg
PS Did you actually go in the inlet with a kayak? Or pulled your kayack up to it? That water looked to scary for me.....(but again, I'm not a kayaker,
only a guy who wants to get to the fish)
