Humm.. I thought elvers or glass eels moved into estuaries in the spring.
This migration accounted for those silly articles recently.
You know the ones;
"over-fishing driven by
strange japanese food habits
has resulted in 'where-did-all-the-civility-in-live-go' questions
and endanged small slice-of-rural-life
add a small sprinkle of science
and dark references to technologic plunder
and conclude with a
'who really knows the outcome of all this'..sermon "
In any event, one of the best things I've done recently is to buy
a couple of nets. These are more fun than you should have.
I have an umbrella type 'dip' net which is pretty useful
in light to moderate currents or anyplace where you can chum the bait
in close.
But the best is a sm cast net (maybe 8' in dia). Its harder to catch
really sm. sand eels or speering with these but not impossible.
Its a hoot to use and you end up investigating all sorts of really
useless but interesting things. I'm thinking about getting one of those
15-20' sm dia brown nets (seine ?) to fool around with as well.
I havent found a useful book on near shore marine life - anyone have
suggestions ?
