I agree w/ Gene and Scott; winter fishing/catching of stripers is not good for their health; however I also agree w / Mike Powers and myself - if its a nice day out, and I have time, I'm only human. However, rather than C&R'ing fish after fish for hours on end; catching a couple and walking away seems an acceptable compromise.

Granted the individual pressure on a hooked fish is great; however the simple fact that few people are out fishing, and only during small windows of reasonable weather seems to keep the stress down to a minimum. This is by no means an attempt to justify it as good for the fish, but winter fishing, in moderation, by a small number of people is probably no worse percentage wise than those early May days when an army of rods, tipped with sea worms greets and guthooks returning schoolies along our coasts.

Respect and consideration and careful handling seems to me to be the underlying issue here. Also - FWIW - its a lot easier to be friendly and share conservation skills and techniques with the few kindred souls who venture out in winter than with the armies of jerks who are out there in the summer.
