Most likely they are there simply because the population is so large that the regular feeding and breeding grounds couldn't support them all. Therefore some of the smaller ones (non-breeders) are staying behind. Scorton couldn't support breeding for the reasons David mentioned. There are some northern rivers whicj do support breeding populations like the Kennebec & possibly the Connecticut.
