My one suggestion (c'mon -- it's more challenging if you have to limit your advice to one piece) is to stop thinking like a surf fisherman. Don't try to use a flyrod to reach out 100 yards; not only is it impossible, it's counterproductive.
The biggest thing for surf fishermen to learn when they switch to the flyrod is that stripers are very literally underfoot. They're in the wash, they're alongside the jetties, they're at the edges of dropoffs, they're in the nooks and crannies of rocks. Use the flyrod as a tool for exploring these areas and you'll do well, try to use it as a "cast straight out and retrieve" tool and you'll be frustrated and disappointed.
