I agree with all the above. What I have found most important and unique about this fishing is the intimate contact and controll you must maintain with the fly. I find that by holding the rod under my arm and pointing the rod tip directly at the fly, I can feel in my fingertips exactly what is going on at the other end. I learned this at night, when eyesight is useless anyway. The feeling is close to handlining, which is sort of the opposite you might expect, but its real low tech. And when a fish hits, keep the rod out of the action until all your line is safely out of the basket and on the reel.
