stripping basket

Hving been a salt-water flyfisherman for 50+ yeats, I still do not have all the answers. I just recently started flyrod surffishing. I have taken stripers and blues, but how do you use a stripping basket? I have one, but I can not seem to get it adjusted so that the line goes into it. The problem appears to be, #1 I am to tall, and # 2 I have long arms, so that to use a stripping basket, I need to place it on my hips to get the line to go into it. It is always sliding down. I think in the surf it is a dangerous position. I do realize however you need to keep the line out of the wash as the sand really does a job on the line, also the reel, but that's another story. Most of my 50+ years of flyfishing has been in the bays and rivers where I can live with the line, on the retrieve drifting with the current. Great discussion area, I just found it, anytime I can help anyone in the Rhode Island area don't hesitate to ask. Art
