Charlie:
I was taught some basic rules four of which which I've found key to bass fishing, fly or otherwise.
One:
Start where little water flows into big (rivers into bays, bays into the ocean, etc.). Bass will almost always be in the vicinity of the confluence. Consult a map if you need to. Avoid the open beaches at first.
Break down individual areas and fish the obvious spots; slightly downcurrrent from places where structure or current variance are prominent: piers, bars, feeders, etc.
Fish at night. Leave the party boys at home and fish the midnight side of sunrise as much as you can.
Fish with confidence. If the spot you're casting to is reasonable, work it like you know there are fish there. Then move on. But too fast careless fishing can cause you to buzz past bass at your ankles.
Good Luck!
