You might try using the technique which Frank Hart a charter skipper who
plied the rips of Cuttyhunk employed. During the late 60's when hook quality
was often at question, Frank would give the hook a rigorous twisting using
a pair of Sargent pliers. Only the strong survived. He refused to compromise
on the quality of the hook since it could well have cost him a 60+# fish.
You might ruin a few flies , but you would gain peace of mind.
