Rob, I can remember when at age 14 in 1954(the big hurricane) spending
the summer on Cuttyhunk and seeing large 50lb-60lb fish landed every
night. The next morning the guides would come in and the dock was
covered with fish. Not all big ones but enough to make an impression on
a young boy.
I use to night fish off the barges on the sound side pitch poling
eelskins with long bamboo poles and linen line on flat wound reels.
There will never be another time like that as long as the length and #
of fish taken shortens and increases. With the equipment and the
boats and regulation that now exists more people can experience the
pleasure of catching fish but they will never experience the hayday of
Stripper fishing. I did and it was an experience of a lifetime.
