5/24-5 South Cape Report

choices, choices. Its tough to have so many choices. Do I fish from boat or shore? If I'm on the boat; poke at the shore for bass or cast the flats for blues? Where? If from shore; how; fly, spin or bait? From boat? Spin, deep or surface? And so on.

Anyways; - the blues have dispersed from inshore; they cans till be found here and there along the south cape shore; but its not the here, there, and everywhere madness of last week and the week before.

I had best luck with blues deep in the holes on either side of Succonesset shoal; with two teenage girls on the boat Sunday who wished to fish by being hood ornaments for the Mako I gave up run and gun casting, and instead opted for trolling along Succonnesset. This raised a series of 6-8 pound blues which the girls were pretty much unable to get to the boat on my light spinning gear. The next day I switched to a more serious rod and reel and 20# test and they were able to hold their own against those same sized blues.

For yucks Monday morning I also trolled one of last nights leftover eels along Succonesset weighted down by a 4 oz. bank sinker in hopes of dredging up a big bass. I dredged up a big something, but it wasn't a bass; it was one of those 32-34" death bluefish, all head and long body with a massive gut. What this blue did to the eel was unpleasant to say the least; trimmed off the tip, lacerated the rest, and barfed the tip on the boat when I went to unhook it.

Eels; and bass, and the ponds and jetties at night. Each jetty along the falmouth shore seemed to yield a fish or three, 24-28", at the downcurrent side of the tip; the ponds held an endless stream of mid 20's fish.

Circle hooks rule; I probably hooked 30 bass this weekend on eels. 29 were hooked in the corner of the mouth; 1 was hooked in the base of the throat from which I was able to get the hook back cleanly. Had I been fishing with conventional Siwash bait hooks I could have expected a 25-50% gut hook rate.

Oh - each morning casting the leftover eels along rocky points, jetties and spots on the falmouth shore picked up at least one 30" fish among the mass of mid 20" fish.

Flies - when the wind was down, fish could be raised in the ponds at dawn/dusk on yen old chartreuse clouser as well as a big white deceiver/clouser combo; I was unable to connect with serious breaking fish in a worm hatch despite throwing the kitchen sink one evening.
