Mike: Thanks for the great explanation. I've used this system before and it is effective. It's pretty similar to the one I use, but I use three nail knots and regular mono as opposed to the braid. I just find it a lot easier to use the triple nail knot -to-fly line permanent butt set-up (no splicing required) and, like I said, I've never had a failure. It looks like your system would be a much better set-up to use to attach a mono running line to a shooting head. Next time I set up a shooting head system on one of my reels I'll give it try. Also, as I mentioned in a previous post, I've been using the new Softex in place of Pliobond and am finding it superior in almost every way.
Using 30# tippets: Why would anyone use a tippet which tests at or more than the breaking strength of their fly line or backing?! Sounds like the quickest, most expensive way to lose your fly line!
