6-1-97: Connecticut/Chicopee R. Shad/Stripers

Things were slow at the Holyoke dam on the Ct. River. Had some good-sized fish
on but lost all but one in the current. The controlled flow from the dam was
a bit too slow for good fishing (the one drawback of this place). Tried the South
Hadley side, which was even worse. The derby ended today and a sub-6 lb fish will
probably earn someone a nice prize.

Salvaged the day on the Chicopee R. at Granby Rd. with a bunch of smaller shad
caught. (2-3 lbs).

The shad run is usually all but over by June 20 on the Ct. and probably the Chicopee
as well.

Incidentally, they are catching keeper stripers (10-13 lbers) where the
Chicopee empties into the Ct. Most are falling for livelined herring, which are also
plentiful and easily caught here.
