Marathon is rockin'! I just got back from a week there. Did
everything:
Day 1: 20 dolphin before 10 AM--10 miles offshore. 10 on
flyrod!!! Ate anything--lavander Clouser, then poppers!
1 30lb'er. Saw 2 free-jumping sailfish.
Day 2: 5 decent dolphin--wind switched, weeds broke up.
1 decent blacktip and cudas. Snapper off the docks
up to 4/5 lbs. Through flies to tarpon in the marina--no
hookups. Caught some cudas on the fly, though.
Day 3: Jumped a VERY LARGE tarpon at the 7 mile bridge at
sunset on 20 spinning gear--THE FISH SPOOLED ME!!!!
Hooked another 100-150 lb tarpon on a TLD 20 and
released it after a 2 HOUR battle! Amazing! All on
live pinfish that we caught near the fish cleaning
station a Faro Blanco. Tried searching with flyrod, but tough to see.
Next year!
Day 4: Blew several decent shots at large bonefish on the fly
at the High School flats.
Day 5: Wind blew hard. Tough bonefishing. We couldn't see crap,
but they were there. They basically leave the flats
by noon, though. Too hot.
Day 5: Miami--fly cast to rolling 15-30 lb tarpon in a backwater
area. No taker, but still very cool.
Great trip. The fishing is really good. I needed
two weeks to catch all that I wanted. Man....
