John,
<<How are you fishing the Mousam at night?
<<Are you fishing a hole that you know about from day time scouting? >>
I have fished this area about 30 times and more than 20 of em during the day. I
have also studied the area at spring tides and taken pictures of the bars and holes
that are on the river and the beach.
Once you know the area, you can set up a piece of driftwood or other marker and
than use the house, point or large piece of driftwood on the other side to walk
toward. Note the outside light on the house, they always leave the light on. The
bar is exposed at spring tides, but you will get bigger fish at neap tides as the
slower rip allows your fly to get deeper into the hole. Y
The Mousam has two secrets - the bar in the river leads to an area where the river
channel narrows and flows into a deep hole near the rocks. You can easily see this
and other holes at low tide. The beach has the bar everyone walks out on and the
rocky bar that has several holes on either side. The fish will follow the edge of
the bar and
go from hole to hole as the tide comes in. The left side is easier to fish as the
right side gets hit with a higher surf, but the larger fish are on the right.
The beach to the right is all sand and easy to wade at night all the way down to
the rock jetty. This area has several points and cusps that hold fish at different
times and I rarely see anyone fish it.
Hope this helps get someone started, as company is always welcome when night
fishing here.
