6-19-97: Plum Island (Smorgasbord) Report

Fished PI near the sand bar area at the mouth from about 4 to 8 AM at near low tide. Very few people there until I left, so conditions were great.

Caught a few medium schoolies between 4-5 AM using jigs with a dead drift. Largest fish of the morning for me was about 24 inches, caught on a black teaser. At first light, hordes of foot-long micro bass moved in everywhere and in close chasing inch-long olive-colored minnows. Lots of surfacing fish and bait. It was a situation tailor-made for flyfishing and they cleaned up, with dozens caught per person. The jig chuckers did well too, although quantities were somewhat less than the fly-caught fish. Just about anywhere along the river mouth shore was productive for about 3 hours into the incoming tide.

Also caught two small shad and one pogy on a teaser, all of which were flipping on the surface along with the bass.

I believe tomorrow's the full moon tide. I'll be there again in the AM...
