This will be brief as my keyboard on the laptop is toast.
1-2 pound blues everywhere 200 yards off the shore; more trouble then they are worth ! 10-14" schoolies in the channels; 20-26 mid range bass on the pond flats and marsh edges. 1 27 or 28" bass off a rockpile in Lackey's Bay Naushon following Dave Peros's
advice to look for sand/rock margins.
I pretty much punted on the usual this weekend and did new things; trolli g with wire; fishing the flats in a rowboat and poking around Naushon.
Wireline trolling was ruined by those aforementioned 1-2 pound blues; I could not get past them even with a 6 oz!!! hopkins lure. Of course I was not at Wasque or Middle ground, but simply at Succonesset due to weather.
I spent a lot of time on the Green POnd flat in front of my house picking up 20-26" fish on my 7 wt, both wading and from my dinghy. I am impressed that a 24" striper can tow a 9' dinghy w/ 155# of me inside for perhaps 2-3 minutes and 20-30 yards and
swim away fine. Connected w/ some nice fish both blind casting and sight casting; new experience for me; lots of fun; will be doing more of it in Waquoit or Poppy in the future. The roostertail a 24" fish puts up when hooked against a grassy bank in 18
" of water is awesome! I never realized how fast stripers can be till seeing this.
Sun AM at an ungodly hr I headed westy not east - I was required to be home by 8 AM. Started at Trunk River/Surf drive which was dead at pre-dawn calm low tide. As was Nobska. I saw a wise old striper expert heading towards Naushon and hopped on his wake
; Dave P - were you on Art's boat Sun?
Anyways as the Mako 26 w. twin 2-somethings ran away from me I decided to poke around lackey's bay and its edges as the calm would allow me to see the lethyal rocks.
Perfect conditions for fly work; I was able to drop 60' casts where
I needed over and over. Following Dave Peros's Elizabeths advice I worked rockpiles w. clear sand around them. Heartstopper of the da was seeing a huge 4'+ long fish glide under m boat unrelated to an casting that I was doing.
I had one follow b a big (30"?)fish; putting a sweet cast in thyey samey spot; over the boulder and on the edge of the sand I was rewarded with a hookup w. a 27-28" fish whichy was a blast on the 7 wt.
