6/15 Canal Report, If you didn't make it out there........

...............you didn't miss much.
Luckily got out Friday night, just ahead of the typhoon. Arrived at my latest, lucky Canal hole in Aptuxet right at the slack tide. It was fairly crowded. (time to start beginning my east tide/canal foray's elsewhere) Two "veteren looking" guys right in my spot. There was enough room, so we settled just "upstream" of them. Once we started chumming and began drifting chunks we found that they were bottom fishing with 2-3 ounce weights. Damn. It effectively cut us off from doing any decent drifting in the hole we preferred, but they WERE there first, fair is fair. (Sux, having to work for a living seriously cuts into my effective fishing ) . We could have moved on but decided since the fishing was slow anyway, we would just hop around them a bit and wait 'em out. Once the current picked up some they switched the weights for a proper drift technique. Fair and reasonable enough guys. (if you are listening, Hi there.) They had been fishing all day and found the entire Canal to be qu
ite slow. Once they left, and while we were debating whether to move down towards the East end, we finally managed 3 stripers between 20" - 26" (smallest to biggest). Tide had risin' quite a bit and was flowing full bore. Really had to have a perfect drift to find the fish.
Sunday morning awoke to heavy rain and winds. The rain I can deal with, not the 20-30 mph winds. Around 10 am the eye of the hurricane must have been over us, SUN! "Zing", in the truck and off like a shot. Checked Aptuxet first. Tide was too high for what I like. Talked to a few guys who braved the early morning wind and rain who swore that the whole area was dead. Many folks out there, NO FISH. Checked the radar station for crowds, (anybody have any luck there?) but moved on and chose to head West to the Stone church. Fished a couple hours, same story: Many folks out there, NO FISH. One guy did say he had gotten a 31" earlier.
Yeesh.......
If the weather holds I'll be boating out to Cuttyhunk Wednesday. Wish me luck.
