Lurkers? Who are you? Who are we?

In the last thread here on BBS5, there were a few emails to those silent readers called "lurkers."

"Lurker" is an old internet word from before the days of the web, when prolific users at text-only community/forums like the Well and CompuServe, called those people who read forums but don't contribute to them: lurkers.

I don't think it's meant to be a nasty word, no ill-feelings, just the recognition that the ratio of readers to writers on a forum generally runs 10-to-1.

Some people like to post a lot. They are the names you see on this forum everytime you log on. Some people go through spells when they post five times every time they visit ReelTime (Larry Backman has had 20 consecutive post sessions that usually take place real early in the morning).

The regulars can tend to get pretty chummy and set some informal rules of their own which aren't easy to understand if you're a recent visitor. Sort of like tribal customs. I'll try to put down in writing a couple of the rules of etiquette at Reel-Time.

1. Real names, not nicknames, are appreciated. If you don't put a name into the "Your name:" space then everyone reads your words as "unknown". A name like LipRipper or Bassmaster is okay, but your full name is great, first name and first initial of your last name are fine.
2. Don't pick fights, don't use words you wouldn't want children to read, and don't be quick with your own temper. Most of the fights that break out here are over misunderstandings and failed attempted at humor. There aren't any special "sarcasm" keys on your keyboard. You can do the smiley thing, 8-) or :-> type of stuff or the CompuServe <G> for <grin>.
3. Don't give away specific hot spots. Detailed driving directions to spots with very limited parking, pointers to specific online maps or aerial photos ... c'mon. This isn't a cheatsheet to fishing the coast of New England.
4. Introduce yourself. We want to know who you are. There have been some great friendships established here. We take the time to fish with each other. We share great advice. So have fun.

So, lurkers of Reel-Time, unite. Come out of the closet. Stand up in the faceless mob and say, "My name is ? and I like Reel-Time...."
