Frank et al,
PLEASE, fill us in on curtrent offshore conditions. I'm trying hard to sort out the offshore scene off the cape, to little avail. What type of boat, what is showing, what methods work? Is it worthwhile to think about offshore fishing here? Or is one better off going for tuna out of Halifax or Hatteras? What about shark? dolphin? billfish? What are the seasons? I hear that the Saltwatrer Edge does pretty well with bluefin on day trips in August-Sept. Anyone else? Where? How?
I think this BBS could be invaluable in setting up a new fishery here, if one exists. My limited NE offshore experience leads me to believe there is a world out there beyond bonito and false albacore. I'll take all the help I can get.
Here is a couple of start-up questions:
1. What is the tuna situation here? What species, what seasons, what methods?
2. What is a minimal and ideal canyon boat? What are the tradeoffs between fishing the fingers, dump, and going out to the canyons?
3. What are the charter and guide boat options? 2-day charters to the canyons vs loong day trips to the dump?
I'll take all the help I can get on this issue. Would love to get into the offshore scene if there indeed is one.
