7-19: Waquoit/South Cape Beach/Canal

Was at Waquoit Friday and returned there this morning. This time the area
between the jetties was dead. I was unable to raise a fish on anything at the
break and nothing was showing on top either. Tried the points upstream, but,
other than the lone schoolie or two grubbing for crabs, there just wasn't
any activity.

I was about to write off the expedition as "well, at least the weather is nice"
when I noticed breaking fish (lots of them) about 100 yds off the beach and 100 yds east of
the jetty. I switched to poppers and was able to nab some fish the few times I could
reach the breaking school. Hoping they were in closer and just not showing themselves,
I switched to fly gear but had no luck. Nor did swimmers or metals do anything.
The fall-like mini-blitz, birds working and all, continued to move east almost all the way
to South Cape, so I just followed it, casting poppers as I went along. Sizes from 20-25 inches
and no blues mixed in. There were definitely some larger ones porpoising a bit further out
then I could reach. By the way, other than a guy fishing bait off the South Cape
parking lot, I had the entire mile from S.C. to Waquoit to myself.

Just a note about the Canal. I checked the east end numerous times at tide changes
this weekend and didn't see anything worth breaking out the rod for. But, next weekend
should once again have good plugging tides at dawn. I'll be out there.
