Some initial thoughts on fishing from a kayak:
1. Casting - your range is a lot shorter, but I wonder how important that is relative to your ability to get out to where the fish are? As one who has caught my share of stripers no more than a leader's length from the rod tip, I'm not convinced that range is that critical in most circumstances.
2. I'm using a Necky Gannet, and its stability is considerable, more than I had expected. I can cast comfortably and have yet to worry about tipping. It moves well in most conditions.
3. Working with tide and wind can be interesting. You may have to plan out several hundred yards of casting, taking wind and tidal flow into consideration as you glide through a likely area. I was surprised at how few casts I could get off in some situation before I'm well away from where I wanted to be. Much of the time I keep the paddle across my lap, although I do have a tether, and even with the rod under one arm I can perform small maneuvers or try to stay on station.
OK, admittedly, I am new at this, and while I've caught some nice smallmouths and largemouths in fresh water I have yet to nail any stripers - but then, I haven't gotten out too much, either.
Anyway, for those who are interested, hope these thoughts are worthwhile.
