Mark: there were several posts about this in last year's reports. I think the
general conclusion was that it is awful tough to fish successfully from a
kayak in any kind of current, wind, etc. As you mentioned, casting distance
is reduced considerably due to height off the water. Also, the potential for
a big fish yanking you around in circles, or backwards is potentially
'upsetting' for many sea kayaks. I tried it once, chasing breaking fish but
had no luck as they dove when I approached, and the time to drop the paddle,
pick up the rod and line, etc was too much effort. Others with more stable
kayaks and larger openings can do this much easier, but you need a fairly
wide beam for stability, something I don't have. Anyway, if you can answer
this situtation, I would be interested. I bought a fly rod holder for my
kayak and will try trolling this year. Probably same results.
