The Swordfish fisheries, in particular the Antlantic Fishery, is heavily overfished. The predominant catch are juvenile fish (avg. 60 lbs remember, these are fish that can reach over 1000 lbs in weight) that have not had the opportunity to spawn yet. In addition, the tremendous 'by-catch' is affecting other stocks as well. I agree with Steve, long lining for any type of fish aught to be banned.
The banning of swordfish in some of the top resaurants is an excellent first step. It may, at this point, only be a drop in the bucket, but it is certainly a place to start, and it is raising public awareness. If you want to find out more about this, read the most recent addition of Audobon Magazine. They have an excellent article on this issue.
Swordfish is wonderful, but I for one am not going to be eating it anytime in the near future. I would encourage you to follow suit.
