I once saw perhaps 50 or 100 big eels, 2' long at a guess up in the flats behind the Surfside Hotel at Great Pond in late Sept or early Oct. They were all massed around each other and if I didn't know eels spawned offshore; I would have sworn they were spawning.
Very eerie sight.
