A few weeks ago I was talking to a fellow FFerman who was (or is) a commercial fisherman. He was lamenting the fact that dogfish had recently been declared as an endangered (or in danger) species.
He made the interesting observation that every species that had been targeted by commercial fishermen had been pushed to the brink of extinction.
Dogfish, when they were considered trash fish, were so numerous that dragger fishermen would cut their nets to get them out. Then they would have to spend hours repairing the nets.
Its a sad commentary on the state of our ground fish populations.
