Larry,
I would try using a leadcore shooting head with mono running line to maximize my depth potential.
I'd try large flies to match the prdominant large bait available (squid, herring, pollack, small blues ).
I'd vary my retrieve from dead drift, to drift and twitch, to smoking it in.
I'd also vary the angle of my retrive - upcurrent, across, and downcurrent.
You can always return at night with eels as John suggested. Or you might try a large swimmer covered with an eelskin on wire at night trolled thru the rip.
As long as you know were they are, you can experiment.
